Why CatInvoice Retired Tabby AI

Why CatInvoice removed its AI and document-extraction features, what previously left the browser, and how the local-first invoice editor works now.

By Muhammad Salman

Product update: CatInvoice has retired Tabby AI and document extraction. The editor is now focused on fast manual entry, reusable local data, templates, and browser-generated PDFs.

Why we made this change

Tabby could draft and edit invoices from natural-language prompts. To provide that feature, prompts, current invoice context, conversation history, and uploaded documents had to be sent through CatInvoice's serverless endpoint to Google-hosted AI services.

That architecture did not fit the clearest version of CatInvoice: a simple invoice tool where invoice content stays in the user's browser. The AI subsystem also added maintenance and operational complexity to a task that is already quick with focused fields and saved client details.

What was removed

  • Tabby chat and prompt-to-invoice drafting
  • AI-assisted invoice editing and onboarding
  • PDF and image document extraction
  • The active Google AI processing connection

What stays in your browser now

Invoice drafts, saved invoices, client details, reusable line items, business details, logos, and installed templates are stored in browser storage. PDF generation runs locally from the invoice preview. CatInvoice does not operate a cloud invoice database or account system.

Browser storage is not an automatic backup. Clearing site data, losing a browser profile, or switching devices can remove saved records, so users should export JSON backups regularly.

Limited product analytics remain

CatInvoice uses Google Analytics 4 for a small allowlist of product events and Microsoft Clarity for masked interaction analytics. Text entered into form fields is masked in Clarity. Rendered invoice previews and saved-invoice text are not additionally masked and may appear in consented recordings. Google Analytics events do not contain invoice numbers, names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, line items, totals, currencies, notes, payment details, uploaded logos, or free-form error messages.

Users can review or change analytics preferences from the privacy-settings control. See the privacy policy for the current data-flow description.
